I personally feel that being a coach is the most draining job in the world. You want to like your team--REALLY like them. Work with them, improve them, make them the best they can be. You're basically a second-parent to these kids. Aside from veterans, most guys in sports are rookies right out of high school or college. They need encouragement. How is that different from being a parent? A LOT different. Tons of difference. Difference squared, carry the 2, multiply by 7--basically, different. But truth is: It sucks being a coach. I don't know but I'm pretty sure if you threw me in there as a coach, I'd have a heart attack before I hit 25. It's HARD. You can yell, scream, swear, rant, rave, etc but you know what--it's not going to fix, change or improve a thing.
So, we lambast these guys like Denny Green, Ozzie Guillen, etc but are they wrong? I vote no. They're right. They say what we want/don't want to hear. They're honest, make no excuses and point every flaw that we as fans point out. Do we want to hear that? Sometimes, no. But do we need to hear it? Yes, always. Honesty hurts but it's the best. And this is why I'm not an NFL coach. I'd bench Grossman, put in Griese, not let Berrian OR Benson play and generally give the game to whatever team we're playing--JUST to make a point.
But that's why I'm not an NFL coach.
